The Asphalt Shingle Roof Indianapolis Homeowners and Businesses Trust

An asphalt shingle roof is the workhorse of Central Indiana housing, and for good reason: architectural-grade shingles shrug off hail, wind, and the relentless freeze-thaw cycle that punishes Indy roofs from December through March. But the shingle is only the cap. Alpha Holistic Roofing engineers the full envelope beneath it, from ice-and-water shield and synthetic underlayment to proper ridge ventilation, so the system performs as a unit instead of a patchwork.

This pillar covers every bituminous system we install: asphalt shingles, modified bitumen for low-slope sections, built-up roofing for flat commercial decks, and asphalt roll roofing for utility structures. When a roof is too low-pitch for shingles, our flat and low-slope roofing systems take over, and when it is time to weigh longevity, our metal and premium roofing options sit on the table too.

Asphalt & Modified Roofing Services We Install

Four asphalt-based systems, each matched to slope, budget, and building type, all installed to the same holistic standard.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing

The default for Indianapolis steep-slope homes. GAF-grade asphalt shingle roofing installed over a full engineered envelope, with honest repair-or-replace guidance and manufacturer-backed wind warranties.

Architectural / Dimensional Shingles

Our recommended default: dimensional shingles with a layered, shadow-line look, 30-to-50-year and lifetime ratings, and high wind ratings that hold through Indiana spring storm season.

3-Tab Shingles

The budget-friendly flat-profile option. We install 3-tab shingles where they still make sense and tell you plainly when stepping up to architectural will pay off over the life of the roof.

Modified Bitumen Roofing

Multi-ply SBS and APP mod-bit for low-slope porches, additions, and small commercial roofs. Torch-down, cold-adhered, and self-adhered options engineered with redundant layers, not a single vulnerable membrane.

Built-Up Roofing (BUR)

Classic tar-and-gravel: 3-ply and 4-ply built-up roofing with hot asphalt, reinforcing felts, and a gravel ballast for long-lived flat commercial and industrial decks around Indianapolis.

Asphalt Roll Roofing

Economical mineral-surfaced roll roofing for sheds, garages, porches, and utility structures. Fast to install on low-slope decks, with straight talk on the trade-off in lifespan.

The Envelope Approach

Our Asphalt Roofing Installation Process

We do not just nail shingles; we engineer roofing systems. Every asphalt, modified bitumen, or built-up project follows the same five-step Alpha Holistic process, tailored to the realities of an Indianapolis roof: the deck has to be sound, the ventilation has to breathe, and the water has to have nowhere to go but the gutter.

  • Free holistic inspection of decking, flashing, ventilation, and existing layers before we quote a single square
  • Honest tear-off vs. overlay recommendation (Indiana code limits you to two shingle layers, so we rarely overlay)
  • Full envelope build: ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, and balanced ridge ventilation
  • Material selection matched to slope and building type, from architectural shingles to SBS modified bitumen cap sheets
  • OSHA-compliant crews, property drop-zone protection, and magnetic nail sweeps on every job
  • Manufacturer-backed material warranty paired with our own workmanship guarantee
  • Final walkthrough so you see exactly what was installed and why it will last

How to Choose

Slope, Budget & Building Type: Matching the Right System

The right asphalt system is decided by pitch first, then budget and building use. Here is how we steer the decision for Indianapolis homes and businesses.

Steep-Slope Homes

For any standard pitched roof, architectural asphalt shingles are the default: best value, strongest wind ratings, and the curb appeal Indy neighborhoods expect. 3-tab is the budget fallback when the numbers demand it.

Low-Slope Sections & Additions

Porches, dormers, and room additions that drop below shingle-rated pitch get modified bitumen. The multi-ply cap-sheet system carries granules for UV protection and resists the standing water shingles cannot handle.

Flat Commercial & Industrial Decks

Large flat roofs get built-up roofing or, where a brighter cool-roof membrane fits, a single-ply alternative. We scope each deck for drainage and traffic before recommending BUR over membrane.

Not sure which system fits your roof? Compare the flat-roof angle on our flat and low-slope roofing systems page, weigh the membrane route via single-ply roofing systems, or ask us to extend an aging roof with roof coatings and protective systems.

Pairing Asphalt Roofing with the Rest of Your Envelope

An asphalt roof rarely fails on its own schedule. Indiana hail and straight-line winds bring most shingle damage, so when a storm hits, our storm and emergency roofing team handles tarping and insurance documentation, while routine wear is caught early through roof repair, inspection, and maintenance. If your shingles are nearing the end but the deck is sound, a restorative protective roof coating can buy years; if it is truly time to start over, our roof installation and replacement crews build the whole system from the deck up.

Why Indianapolis Homeowners Choose Alpha Holistic

Licensed, insured, and OSHA-compliant, with manufacturer-backed materials and a 4.9/5 rating from 500+ neighbors. We engineer systems, not patchwork, and we put it in writing.

★★★★★

“Our 1990s architectural shingle roof was shedding granules after the spring hail. Alpha re-roofed the whole thing, added ice-and-water shield in the valleys, and fixed the attic ventilation we never knew was a problem. The price was exactly what they quoted.”

Bradley K., Greenwood

★★★★★

“We have a low-slope addition over the kitchen that leaked every winter no matter who patched it. They installed a modified bitumen system instead of more shingles, and two freeze-thaw seasons later it is bone dry.”

Priya N., Fishers

★★★★★

“I run a small commercial building near downtown and needed the flat built-up roof addressed before it failed. Alpha walked the deck, explained BUR versus a membrane, and never pushed the pricier option. Honest crew, clean job site.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an asphalt shingle roof last in Indianapolis?

In Central Indiana's freeze-thaw and storm climate, a properly ventilated 3-tab roof typically lasts 15 to 20 years, while architectural (dimensional) shingles last 25 to 30 years or more, with some lifetime-rated products going longer. Ventilation and underlayment matter as much as the shingle itself, which is why we engineer the full envelope rather than just laying the top layer.

What is the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles?

3-tab shingles are flat, lighter, and the budget option, with shorter warranties and lower wind ratings. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker and layered for a richer shadow line, carry 30-to-50-year or lifetime ratings, and hold up far better to Indiana wind and hail. For most Indianapolis homes we recommend architectural; we install 3-tab when budget or matching an existing roof calls for it.

Is modified bitumen a good choice for a flat or low-slope roof?

Yes. Modified bitumen (mod-bit) is one of the best asphalt-based options for low-slope porches, additions, and small commercial decks where shingles cannot shed water properly. Its multi-ply SBS or APP construction adds redundancy, and the granulated cap sheet resists UV. For larger flat roofs we will also price single-ply or built-up options so you can compare fairly.

Can you just overlay new shingles over my old roof?

Sometimes, but rarely the right call here. Indiana code allows a maximum of two shingle layers, and an overlay hides deck rot, traps heat, and shortens the new roof's life. We almost always recommend a full tear-off so we can inspect and repair the decking, install fresh ice-and-water shield, and start the warranty clean.

What does an asphalt roof replacement cost in Indianapolis?

Cost depends on square footage, roof pitch, the number of existing layers to tear off, decking condition, and material grade. We do not hide behind vague estimates: after a free inspection you get an itemized, transparent quote, plus financing and storm-insurance claim guidance when applicable. There are no surprise change orders once we agree on scope.

Do you handle storm and hail insurance claims on asphalt roofs?

We do. Spring and summer hail and straight-line winds are the leading cause of shingle damage in the Indy metro. We document the damage, meet your adjuster on site, and coordinate the claim so your repair or replacement is handled correctly. For active leaks we also provide emergency tarping through our storm and emergency roofing team.
